We Travel for Food and You Should Too

More people are taking culinary vacations than ever. Food is a big part of many vacations and memories.

You may have taken a great food tour or learned how to make pasta in Italy. Or you might have eaten at an amazing restaurant. All of those memories are now treasured.

You may have noticed that even a faint smell of something you had on vacation can instantly transport you back to the time you first experienced it. The aroma of an Argentinian Malbec instantly transports me back to a Mendoza tasting room. The aroma of galangal, lime, and kaffir leaves instantly transports me back to the Thai cooking class I took in Chiang Mai.

4. Tokyo, Japan/ASIA

The uniqueness of Japan's food culture is the reason it consistently ranks among the top 10 global food destinations. UNESCO added traditional Japanese cuisine or "washoku", the second culinary tradition to receive this honor, to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2013. Food is an important way for the Japanese to build relationships with their family and friends. It is also a pillar of Japanese society. The sheer variety of Japanese cuisine is mind-blowing. From sushi, ramen, and Yakitori (grilled skewers), to the highly-coveted Japanese Wagyu Beef and the ubiquitous sticky rice, the food has something for everyone. Tokyo is the only city with more Michelin-starred restaurants per square mile and has more than New York. This is why Japan should be at the top of your list of foodie destinations!

5. Bangkok, Thailand/ASIA

The street food in the city is so popular that it has become a tourist attraction. Street corners are lined with stalls, some of which have received Michelin stars. Vendors with large woks or pans can be seen in many neighborhoods. On the other hand, there are fine dining restaurants such as Gaggan with its world-renowned cuisine, Suhring, which serves German food, and Bunker, which offers contemporary American dishes. Bangkok is sure to satisfy your taste buds, no matter what you choose!

6. Hong Kong/ASIA

Hong Kong's 11,000 restaurants could easily make it the culinary capital of Asia. The confluence of several influences gives Hong Kong's cuisine its unique character. This includes Cantonese, other Chinese cuisines like Peking, Shanghainese, and Szechuan as well as colonial food traditions (mostly British), Japanese and Korean food. Dimsums are the most popular food in Hong Kong. These steamed, savory dumplings have become an art form, with dishes like black truffle har-gau (shrimp steamed dumplings) and other variations.
