About 35 brands of quality running shoes are available today. Each brand has its own design, using the latest technologies and materials for improved performance. The best model for you will depend on many factors such as weight, cushioning and foot type. We've put together a list of some of the top running shoes that our experts recommend, along with some other highly rated choices from fellow runners.
1. Lululemon Blissfeel 2
The Blissfeel 2 has the same weight and stack height as the original, but it feels heavier and firmer. The 2 was like running with Adidas Ultraboost. The ride is bouncy and thick, but the 2 has plenty of bounce. After testing more narrow, less supportive trainers, the toe space and cushioning was a welcome respite.
2. Hoka Bondi 8
Hoka's Bondi shoe is the most cushioned. It has an extended heel that absorbs shocks and provides absorption. They're like mattresses for the feet. The profile of the shoe is also slightly curved to provide a smooth transition from heel-to-toe. The Bondi is a big shoe, and testers have commented that it's "a lot" of shoe, even though its eighth version is the lightest.
A tester said that these shoes are not designed for speed. They are designed for a leisurely walk or run that will provide comfort over long distances. In that category, they perform well.
3. Saucony Endorphin Elite
The Elite pair is one of the most sought-after trainers in your collection. The number of miles you put on your shoes depends on you, as a runner. But we found that after nearly 1,000 miles of testing by almost a dozen runners, it's best to save the Elite for race day. The Endorphin Pro+, Endorphin Pro 3 and Elite all have a propulsive ride that forces you to run faster. Runs as easy as four miles can become marathons.
4. Asics Gel Nimbus 25
Best running shoes overall:
We love:the PureGel technology and large foam underfoot makes them supremely comfortable
We do not like:you pay for advanced technology
The largest footbed in running shoes
Weight 255g
8mm heel drop
Rubber outsole
FF Blast Plus Eco cushioning
Review by Rebecca Astill
The Asics Gel Nimbus 25s will make you grow several inches. The foam is 20% larger than the previous model and therefore more comfortable. The Asics Gel-Nimbus 25s are soft, bouncy, and lightweight despite their bulk.
The Gel-Nimbus 25s are different from previous versions in that they have PureGEL technology, which is a cushioning system that uses bio-based materials to absorb shock and improve shock absorption. These changes aren't dramatic, but they are noticeable. The shock absorption on these running shoes is among the best that I have tried.
They're the perfect shoes for long distances, as they are lightweight and comfortable. But their springiness makes them great for sprints. They're not great for gripping when it rains.
Not everyone needs such expensive and advanced tech. For a casual fitness runner, I recommend the Asics Gel Excite 9 Nagino Trainers. If you have the money and think you will use them often enough to make your investment worthwhile, then you cannot buy better.
5. Nike Pegasus 39
Best Value Running Trainers, 9/10
We love:they are even lighter than the previous version
We do not like:the thick upper is unbreathable
Nike's Pegasus design is in use since 1983
Weight: 261g
10mm heel drop
Carbon rubber outsole
Forefoot Zoom Airbags and React Foam Cushioning
Review by Rebecca Astill
The classic design of Nike Pegasus, which has been in production since 1983, is a bit nostalgic. It was originally designed as a midrange running shoe, but has been updated every year for over 30 years.
What's the Pegasus 39 all about? It's actually more like older models than most recent 38s. Dual Zoom Airbags have been added to the forefoot, and the heel. This replaces the Zoom Air units that were full length (more springy but not as cushioned).
These trainers provide a reliable, steady running experience but are not extraordinary. The durable sole and foot provide ample cushioning and support, as well as shock absorption. The 39s also weigh less than the 38s.
If I'm completely honest, the Pegasus 39s are more my everyday walking shoes than they are for running. It's partly due to the fact that they look great with jeans and are very comfortable. They're still a great shoe, but not as high-tech as some of the others. This is done to keep the price at a reasonable level.
6. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 22
We love:the excellent ar support for overpronators
We do not like: it might be a little too structured for regular runners
Brooks Adrenaline GTS 22, cushioning that improves performance
Weight 255g
12mm heel drop
DNA Loft cushioning
Review by Abigail Buchanan
The shoes were extremely comfortable and supportive. Brooks shoes have a reputation for being cushioned, comfortable and supportive. I thought these Brooks Adrenaline 22 trainers would be too soft for me, but I still recommend them for those who need plenty of squishy support. This Adrenaline 22 is a little more structured under my arches and would make a great shoe for daily mileage.
The shoe still feels supple and cushioned, but has a higher drop than the average of 12mm. The "guard rail" (firmer foam 'bumpers on either side of the heels) technology keeps my posture and form in check. This is a stability shoe for people who have a slight overpronation. It is lighter, simpler and more responsive than other bulky shoes.
7. Adidas Ultraboost 22
Since its launch in 2015, the Ultraboost is a favorite of male and female distance runners. The designers reimagined the latest version using data gathered from more than a million scans of feet to create the male and female lasts that the shoe is built around. The Ultraboost 22 features a narrow S-curved instep and a narrow heel. This is according to Rami hashish Ph.D. a doctor of Physical Therapy and expert on body performance and injuries. He adds that the shoe has extra support in the inner outsole, to prevent feet from rolling forward, as is common with women.
8. Puma Run XX Nitro
Puma took into account the feedback of athletes such as Molly Seidel, as well as consumers in general when creating its women's-specific running shoes. Restrepo says that the XX Nitro was designed for women who like a comfortable, steady ride. It's great for those who overpronate, and for anyone looking for extra comfort thanks to its supportive upper and responsive foam sole.
9. Nike Invincible 3
The Nike Invincible features 37 millimeters (the same foam that is used in the brand’s wildly popular racing shoes) of the softest, lightest and most responsive Nike foam. The Invincible is great for runners who want to simulate running on a soft surface when they're on easy days. And the responsive bounce will make you feel as if you are running faster. Amie Dworecki . These shoes are designed to provide high levels of support for those who have an overpronation. They also have a decent grip, which is great if you're running on dirt paths.
